Marriage in Washington, D.C.

In December of last year, the City Council of the District of Columbia passed a bill extending equal marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples in Washington, D.C. by 11 - 2.

Anti-marriage organizations tried to force the city council to subject the bill to a public vote.

They failed.

They tried to use the U.S. Congress, which has jurisdiction over D.C., to block the bill.

They failed

Yesterday they filed a last-minute appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court to keep the law from taking effect.

They failed.

The law takes effect today. As of midnight last night, the relationships of both gay and straight couples will be recognized in the eyes of the law of Washington D.C.

But Catholic Charities had it revenge. Any married individual who goes to work for CC will not have their spouse eligible for heath insurance benefits, effective a day or two ago. Any individual who marries in the future will not have their spouse eligible for benefits. Any individual who is married and wants to have their spouse get benefits through CC in the future is out of luck. (Existing employees who are already married and whose spouse is getting benefits through CC are grandfathered in).

True, but I'd characterize it more as them cutting off their nose to spite their face. They also threatened to pull out entirely, but didn't.

That's what I was trying to convey. Didn't get enough sarcasm in, I guess.

Aw, and I've had a soft spot for some Catholic groups ever since the big MA Catholic adoption org closed down, rather than obey a dictate to reject gay families. (Which would be illegal anyway, but they could have fought and made a big stink.)
